What is the difference between Disorder Eating and Eating Disorders?

Eating Disorders vs. Disordered Eating

Eating disorders (ED) and disordered eating (DE) are similar but have some distinct differences. I specialize in the overlap of ED/DE and Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and other digestive health conditions.

Eating disorders are diagnosed mental health conditions characterized by severe disturbances in eating behavior, thoughts, and emotions. It often involves an unhealthy preoccupation with food, weight, and body shape. Eating disorders have a significant impact on both physical and mental health and can be life-threatening if not treated.

Disordered eating refers to a spectrum of unhealthy behaviors, thoughts, and attitudes toward eating, body image, and weight. While disordered eating may not meet the criteria for a diagnosed eating disorder it is still unhealthy and may negatively impact one's physical and mental health.
